Tyler: North Pole to Greenland!

March 4, 2011  IMG_1184

Tyler will be co-leader of the Catlin Arcitic Survey, a ski expedition that begins at the North Pole and ends on the northern coast of Greenland.

Click here to follow his progress. The training expedition begins in a few days and the team departs from the North Pole in late March.

From the Caltin Arctic Survey website: Four polar explorers are conducting an extreme expedition, travelling up to 350 miles (560 km) across floating sea ice from early March to May during the harsh winter to spring transition. Their mission – only possible because of their unique experience – is to gather valuable oceanographic and ice data for Dr Boxall and the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton, UK.

Date: July 22, 2010

John Huston was interviewed on National Public Radio's Science Friday on July 23rd.

John appeared on Science Friday, hosted by Ira Flatow, last Friday (this is one of his favorite radio shows!).

Click here to listen to the podcast. John joins the show at 11:25 of the podcast. You may have to listen to the 10 second commercial that opens the podcast before you can move later in the show.

John discussed his experiences on the 2005 modern Amundsen team that re-ran the original race for the South Pole for a BBC/History Channel documentary. Huston will join host Ira Flatow, along with the other guest Dr. Ross MacPhee, curator of an American Museum of Natural History exhibit “Race to the End of the Earth”.

More to come soon on the upcoming book and magazine article.

Appearing at American Museum of Natural History and Explorers Club in New York City
by John Huston

John will help launch the new Race to the Pole exhibit at American Museum of Natural History this Saturday afternoon, May 29. Along with his Norwegian colleague Harald Kippenes, I will have the entire Victorinox North Pole 09 expedition kit on display for interactive viewing. In the late spring of 2005 Harald and John traveled together on the 5-man modern Amundsen Team on the Greenland ice cap for 72 days, as part of a History Channel/BBC observational documentary film project titled The Race to the Pole. The expedition re-ran the original 1911 race for the South Pole using exclusively 1911-style clothing, equipment and food. Much of the gear from this expedition will also be on display.

Monday, June 7 at 6pm John will be speaking at the Explorers Club of New York. His presentation will be Indigenous Influences on Polar Exploration and Science. There presentation will include a short guest speaker.

An update from the past 6 months.

Speaking: John had a busy winter of speaking. Notable events included well-attended presentations at The Caterpillar Corporation, Blue Diamond Parts/Ford Power Stroke Diesel Sales meeting, U.S. Equities, appearances for Bergans of Norway and at several schools and community organizations.

We were the keynote speakers at Victorinox Swiss Army's annual national sales meeting and Midwest Mountaineering's annual Outdoor Expo.

On top of his duties as a ski coach, Outward Bound supervisor and father in the past few months Tyler found the time to speak at several Minnesota schools and community organizations.

Guiding: This spring we both made it back to the Arctic Ocean for a bit of guiding in a scientific basecamp just north of Ellesmere Island, Canada. For a few weeks we assisted a group of international scientists in taking seawater and air samples necessary to the affect of increasing PH carbon dioxide levels on sea life. It was fantastic to be on the ice in the warm April sun and unlike last year, a chance to relax from time to time in one of the most beautiful places in the world.
