Going South for a Bit of Exposure

Chicago Tribune 12/25/07

When most people dream about going south for the holidays, they think about places like Miami Beach or Cancun. John Huston, a polar expeditioner, has his sights a few thousand miles further south.

Huston, a former Glen Ellyn resident featured in the Tribune last winter as he prepared for a spring expedition to the Canadian Arctic, recently began a trip to the South Pole.

A guide for Baffin Islands-based NorthWinds Polar Expeditions, Huston, 31, flew to Hercules Inlet in Antarctica last month to begin a 55-day, 720-mile ski trip to help British researchers investigate connections between light exposure and glaucoma. They will be exposed to sunlight 24 hours a day during the Southern Hemisphere summer.
